College & University
Programs Continued
Mission Statement:
We
believe that we can uplift, educate and enlighten everyone we come in
contact with by professionally performing Musical & Creative
Expressions that acknowledge our African and African American Heritage.
Purpose:
The purpose is three-fold:
1. To learn, teach and demonstrate using the vehicle of
the performing arts of songs and African Percussions.
2. To enlighten and instill in our audiences pride for African Heritage across the Diaspora.
3. To extend through the music, a powerful, culturally
deep and valuable message about changing the conditions of our present
world thus making it a better place in which to live.
Program One:
Program 1: "A Hundred Drums Come to "Your College or University"
This presentation consists of a
2-hour workshop intensive. Workshop includes a half-hour
demonstration of music and instruments, 1-hour hands on interactive
workshop with students/participants and ends with a half hour drum
circle. Program coordinators are strongly encouraged to purchase
50-100 drums and give them to the first 50-100 students, staff or
instructors who attend this workshop. The drum we use in our
workshop/demonstrations is a sakara drum, a small hand held drum made
in Nigeria, West Africa. It is very inexpensive but provides the
same excitement from those who hear and play them. As a matter of
fact this drum is also easy to play so everyone can participate who has
a drum. The "Voices Of Africa" have these drums available for sale.
Note:
We have found that this type of program on a College/University campus
enrolls tremendous response from the student body, staff and
instructors. The draw is that each participant would receive a
free drum!!! The drums would be purchased by the
University/College. This would be a fee outside of the fee for
our workshop.
Program Two:
Program 2: Lecture/Demonstration
This concept works for campuses as well. Students would be
encouraged to attend this workshop as part of a variety of
syllabi. I.E., social studies, anthropology, philosophy,
religion, art, music, education, etc. In this case, students
would be required to attend the workshop as part of their course
study. We would fine tune our presentation around the student
body interest and offer this lecture/demonstration for the duration of
the class period. Here you would solicit the support of the
professors, guidance counselors. Deans and department heads and the
result would be a built in audience. You would also be able to
convince funding sources of the educational advantage of this program
and get more financial support.
